Jackson, Neal, Lovetinsky Lead Chargers' Big Night From 3 in Victory vs. Vikings

Sophomore forward Kennedy Jackson (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) went 3 of 3 from 3-point range and finished a rebound shy of a double-double to help the Carl Sandburg College women’s basketball team to a 77-69 victory over Augustana JV on Tuesday night John M. Lewis Gymnasium.

The Chargers (2-3) scored their most points this season while hitting 13 3-pointers, including 8 of 16 in the second half, to end a three-game skid.

KEY MOMENTS

  • The Vikings used a 9-1 run early in the third to take a 40-38 lead, but Sandburg came right back with 12 of the next 13 points to for a 50-41 advantage and never trailed again. Freshman guard Allison Westerdahl (Peoria, Ill./Limestone) opened the stretch with a scoop-shot layup, and fellow first-year guards Destiny Allen (Springfield, Ill./Lanphier) and Kelsi Legge (Galesburg, Ill./Galesburg) had key 3-pointers in the run.
  • Another Allen trey put the Chargers up 60-50 with 8:00 to play before Augustana JV answered with six straight points to get within four. But an Allen rebound basket followed by a Cora Neal (Monmouth, Ill./Monmouth-Roseville) free throw and a Neal 3-pointer extended the Chargers’ lead back to 10 at 66-56.

SANDBURG STANDOUT
Jackson scored 13 points on 4-of-7 shooting and connected on all three of her 3-point tries. She added a team-best nine rebounds (with five on the offensive glass), three assists and two steals.

OTHER TOP CHARGERS

  • Sophomore Hailey Lovetinsky (Overland Park, Kan./Spring Hills) tied Neal for the team lead with 17 points in addition to posting three assists and two blocks.
  • Neal hit four 3s among her 17 points, added three assists and had two steals.
  • Allen had her best night as a Charger, scoring nine points on 4-of-7 shooting and handed out a team-lead six of Sandburg’s 20 assists.
